Freedom of Speech …

People come to America for one thing. They come to America because they want to live the ”American dream”. What is the American dream? It’s the house, the car, the full time job, the kids, the dog (or whatever kind of pet you prefer) and the freedom that comes with it all. America is known for the ”land of the free”, isn’t it? America is a beautiful place but it has it’s ugly days. One of the reasons I love America is that we have freedom of speech. In most countries, citizens don’t have much say but we live in a country that revolves around the ”people”.

We elect our Presidents and are given the rights to vote for all kinds of things. We can protest against saving a tree in our beloved neighborhood to protesting against abortion. That’s the country that we live in and that’s why it’s so fabulous. But sometimes fabulous America isn’t all that fabulous. It has its moments where the people turn ugly and against each other. We start to cause problems within our circles and abuse  our freedom of speech by hurting other peoples feelings. What stuck to me and always hits home to me in this documentary was when we examined the story of Debbie Almontaser. She is a Yemani-American Muslim veteran in the New York City school system and the founder of the first Arabic-English public school and was the principal of it. She was forced to resign in 2007 because she cited the word ”Intifada” which meant different things as time progressed from ”shaken off” to ”uprising”. Officials wanted her fired because they didn’t believe she should be a principal of a school that promoted violence. As time goes on, the meaning behind certain words change and in this case that is what happened. It all depends on how you perceive the word. She filed a lawsuit claiming her First Amendment was violated. I believe that if she wasn’t a Yemani-American Muslim that didn’t have the appearance of a Muslim she probably wouldn’t have been forced to resign. American Arabs get blamed and put in the same category as Extremists because of their appearance and religious beliefs. Most people believe that all Muslims are ”terrorists” which is not true at all. “Virtually all terrorists today, are Muslim. This is a sad fact.” And it is a sad fact. We all put labels on each other all because of what Extremists have done in the past. It’s like saying all Germans are Nazis or all Jewish people are cheap. Putting a stereotype or a label on a person is bad judgement and is wrong in so many ways. This poor lady lost her job for something that was taken way off guard and out of hand. Just because she’s Muslim and looks like the typical Muslim. All she wanted to do was her job and being that the school was a public school that was open to students who wished to learn Arabic it was a problem, especially since the school was made post 9/11.

Like I’ve said in my earlier class posts, American Arabs get blamed for what others do, it’s a stereotype that will never go away. I have blonde hair and hazel green eyes, most people would never think that I am Muslim. They hardly ever believe that I am. But I am. I don’t eat pork and I celebrate all of the Muslim holidays with my family. If it were me instead  of Debbie, things would probably be different. Freedom of Speech is a big deal in today’s society because it keeps us growing and fighting for what we believe in. If we didn’t have Freedom of Speech then we’d have nothing at all but a boring country. In a post 9/11 world, anything said or done by a muslim living in America is a threat to society. Americans have this stereotype of Muslims in America that will never go away because of 9/11. Debbie’s son fought for the country of the United States. It’s ironic how they would treat her in a way that made her feel less than whole. America is full of diverse ethnicities and that’s what’s so beautiful but the way we treat one another after something like 9/11 can make it so ugly. Everyone likes to point a finger but there’s always three pointing back.

Long live The Beatles…(Professor’s Choice Post #8)

It’s an incredible feeling when you think you heard all the greatest songs in the world but yet you always discover a new favorite through networking whether it’s from school, work or friends and etc. The Beatles were not my cup of tea but now they’re my favorite flavor! How have I lived without listening to The Beatles for this long is beyond me? Throughout this blog, I’ve learned so much about The Beatles and I can actually say I became a fan. I read somewhere that went along the lines of ”Not liking The Beatles is as perverse as not liking the sun”. I admit it, it’s kind of hard NOT to like them. I connected a lot with this album and it wasn’t as challenging as I thought it would be. I listened to this album mostly in the comfort of my own home only because that’s where my mind is clear. The Fab Four were storytellers all by themself. They wanted to change the world and they did. They had the power to influence millions of people and they still have that power. The Beatles will exist and live on forever. I came across something that John Lennon had said and was put under heavy pressure from the press because of it. He made a remark and said that ”The Beatles were more popular than Jesus”. John had to apologize of course and explain himself several times. I honestly believe it though. Sometimes artists are put up so high by fans that they actually start worshipping them. After the death of their long time manager Brian Epstein, The Beatles fell apart only to fall together again in this last album Let It Be.

During the 1960’s, drugs were becoming more popular and times were changing. The band members were growing up and beginning to start families. They wanted to continue different things and were developing different priorities. Paul wanted to keep the band together for as long as he could but he couldn’t save the band. Despite all of the problems in the band , the Beatles proved to us that they could “come together” and create one last final masterpiece. That just showed how collaborative The Beatles could be. There is no denying that The Beatles changed the face of music. The Beatles were not just a band “who made it very, very big” as John Lennon said. They were more than that. The Beatles were fighters but when the fighting gets tough, life happens and we can’t fight anymore. Although I had to listen to this album for a couple of  times before I began to love it, I ended up surprising myself and becoming a total Beatle fan. From CANT to Taylor Swift to The Beatles, I am just a bag of mix emotional music! I have come a long way and this has been such a great experience. I’ve learned a lot about music from all three artists. You can get the same kinds of feelings whether it’s sadness or happiness or whatever the case maybe from all types of music.! They were the Kings of rock and roll and deserve to be listened to for eternity. My whole experience with The Beatles during this assignment reminds me of one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs called “Long Live”. The Beatles hold a special place in my little Taylor Swift lovin’ heart.  I’ll end this blog with a statement ,Long live The Beatles!

Whisper words of wisdom…(Professor’s Choice Post #7)

…Let it be. The greatest Beatles song that makes my heart tingle. ”Let it be”, it makes me feel calm. It makes me feel like everything will fall into place eventually and not to worry about anything because a greater force (God?) will help take care of the rest. When you’re going through a hard time, don’t be too upset about it just let it be. It’s kind of like Paul McCartney’s mother telling him ”Don’t worry it gets better”. I mean that’s why Paul wrote this song in the first place. He sings ”When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be”, and I think it’s so beautiful.

We all find ourselves in trouble sometimes and we all seek words of wisdom from someone we look up to. Whenever we hear reassurance from someone who knows how to make it all better especially a mother figure we become relaxed and calm. All the weight on our shoulders disappears. I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It’s so peaceful and soothing. I like to listen to songs when I’m sitting on my stoop and just watching cars pass by on the highway. I was listening to this song one late night and I just thought about life and how everything happens for a reason and how we should all just ”Let it be”. Whatever happens, happens. We cannot control our destinies and fate. If there’s a song out there that’s basically trying to tell you how to solve something, this is it. Three such powerful words can mean and say so much. Let it be. This song inspires me to think positively and can change my mood for the better. I love when songs can do that. It’s such an amazing thing, being human. Music is so beautiful. If I had to choose between music or the sun, I’d be one nocturnal really pale little lady!

This is a depressing song but it’s still so good! It makes me believe that even in your darkest hour there is always someone there to help you get through it. There is a way out even if it doesn’t look like there is. I love it so much I’ve had it stuck in my head for days. My best friend slept over my house and I made her listen to it just  to see if she was going to like the song. She ended up listening to a cover version of it. She ended up loving the song because of the way the girl who covered sang it. For the last two hours, we’ve been sitting on our laptops drinking wine and doing our final assignments for the semester singing to ourselves ”Whisper words of wisdom…let it be”.

I think it’s so great how music brings people together and hold a dear place in our hearts. I feel like the song is self-explanatory. The meaning behind it is exactly what it’s saying. The Beatles are trying to tell me people to stop trying to control things and  let everything fall into place a by itself. It will get a lot better than trying to change all the circumstances and what not. Sometimes you need to do what you need to do, but don’t get so serious all the time,  just do what Paul says and just let it be.

It’s all about ”I Me Mine” … (Professor’s Choice Post #6)

Sometimes when you get too comfortable with your surroundings nothing seems to change until something drastic happens. Paul McCartney tried hard to keep the band together after the death of Brian their manager. The band members felt as if Paul was taking over the group and they didn’t like that. The Beatles were known for writing songs about one another. The song ”I Me Mine” is one of my favorites in this album. The beat and the way it’s written is pure genius. ”I Me Mine” is so clever and so true. We all walk around with invisible ”It’s all about me” t-shirts! We’ve become so selfish and so into ourselves that it’s hurting us and we don’t even know it. The world we live in is a selfish place. Either someone is trying to take control over you and make it all about them or you’re the one that wants the world to revolve around them. In my opinion, this song is about pure ego. ”I Me Mine”, enough said.

George Harrison is straight forward with this song through his lyrics. I love the lyrics ”All I can hear I me mine, I me mine, I me mine Even those tears I me mine, I me mine, I me mine”. It seems to me that George must have been frustrated with people around him being selfish and too into themselves rather than the world surrounding them. This song conveys a perfect message and meaning behind it. This song would be a hit in my eyes in today’s society. Everybody is so into themselves these days from posting a status about their amazing life to see how many ”Like’s” they get or taking pictures and posting them up constantly and what not.

There comes a time in our lives where we do become self-centered and our heads become bigger than our bodies. We all put ourselves on a pedestal and I think in this song George is trying to say ”Look what you people have become”. Greedy and selfish. The Beatles were becoming bigger than ever and everything good always comes to an end. They all reached a point of success and wanted more. This was the last song The Beatles recorded together in a studio and it’s a shame because throughout their musical career all of their songs were about peace and love. This song in comparison to their previous tracks is sort of miserable and very negative. I like that about The Beatles though. They can create masterpieces for all kinds of music. This song is so catchy because it’s repetitive. ”I Me Mine I Me Mine I Me Mine” However, this song is still great and I feel like there’s no better way to express your true feelings than to express them through a song.

Better believe it… (Professor’s Choice Post #5)

It’s funny when you’re listening to a new band and their songs start meaning something to you. I never thought a Beatles song would be a favorite of mine. The first track I heard during this assignment was ”Two Of Us” by The Beatles. It is the first track off the album Let It Be. As I started listening to this song, I thought of really happy times. This song is about two people experiencing life together and how they share so many memories together. Kind of like how The Beatles shared experiences together during their road to stardom. I love how this is a duet between John Lennon and Paul McCartney singing and reminiscing about good times even though during the time the album came out they weren’t even recording in the same studios.

What I love about this song is that anyone can relate to it. We all have people we share fond memories with. For me, I share the greatest memories with my sisters. I have four beautiful sisters that mean the world to me. The greatest gift my mother has ever given to me has probably be my sisters. We grew up together and still are growing up together. Every song tells a story and The Beatles are telling a different story about their lives during stardom. One of my favorite lyrics in the song is ”Two of us riding nowhere Spending someones hard earned pay, You and me Sunday driving, Not arriving on our way back home”. I think of John and Paul singing about their time in the band and their experiences on the road during tour. It’s like they’re singing about spending the money of their fans that bought their albums or went to their concerts but always experiencing it with each other. ”Not arriving on our way back home” meaning since their stars they’re always on the road and that’s the sacrifice they have to make in this industry. ”Two Of Us” addresses the relationship between John and Paul which brought The Beatles such greatness. Although, they both clashed during their time in the band the fact that this song came out of it is beautiful.

My favorite lyric in this song is ”You and I have memories Longer than the road that stretches out ahead” because it reminds me of the relationship I have with my sisters. Nobody knows what you go through besides yourself but if your family is there and sees it all too. My sisters have seen my ups and my downs. They have been there through it all. I remember when my mother would dress me and my sisters alike at family events. Those were some good times and great memories. As the years go by, we all grow up and go on and live our lives separately but we’ll always share memories together. In order to preserve my memory I love to take pictures with my sisters. They call me ”The Picture Queen” because I love taking pictures. The reason I love taking pictures is because I keep them as memories and want to hold on to them for when I get older and I forget what it was like to live with my sisters, take funny pictures and remember what like was like back then. We only live once but if we do it right once is enough, right? Mae West said it best. My two older sisters don’t live at home anymore and I’m the oldest living at home with my other two sisters. We try to make a family day at home where we spend a sister day together. ”We’re on our way home” is such a great line. There’s no place like home with all of my sisters together just hanging out watching a movie and laughing about our days.

Album Rating: 5 (because this song reminds me of my sisters and I love them more than life itself!)

Apparently I Dig A Pony too…(Professor’s Choice Post #4)

Where do I start off with this song? This song is something else . This song starts off with Ringo saying ”Hold it!” because he was busy smoking a cigarette while the guys were trying to start recording. I think because they captured that part in the song makes it so dang good. It’s like that feeling where you’re in a moment and you capture it and you’re like ”YES! I got that on camera!”. It’s like that feeling where you try to reenact something but you can’t because it was so perfect that one time you did it and you just say ”You just had to be there!” kind of moment. This song has so many different meanings and can be interpreted in so many ways. There’s so much going on in this song. I’ve read some of the reviews about this song and a lot of people said this was probably the worst song The Beatles ever created. I for one, do not agree with that. Anything from The Beatles is a classic. They’re ”The Beatles”, they’re original that’s why they are so huge even today. As I continued to do my research, I found out that John Lennon called this song ” a piece of garbage”. That makes me sad a little. I don’t think this should be labeled ”garbage”. It’s far from it. I know it’s hard to dig in and find the true meaning of this song but their isn’t one. Maybe that’s a good thing, you know? We all perceive things differently and each and every one of us can take a little bit of this song and make our own ideas about it.

The fact that there is a restaurant named after this song is pretty awesome. How can this song be labeled ”garbage” now? John Lennon was his own worst critic on this one. Yeah, he had better songs but this one isn’t so bad.  According to an article I read online, John Lennon in reference to the song said “I was just having fun with words. It was  literally a nonsense song. You just take words and you stick them together, and  you see if they have any meaning. Some of them do and some of them don’t.” Every good artist intends on writing something that has meaning. Songs like this make us think and let us be creative. That’s what’s so awesome about The Beatles, their music is universal like all across the universe 😉

In this song, there’s no right or wrong meaning. The reason for that is because it’s personal and subjective.  One of my favorite lines in this song is ”I told you so All I want is you Everything has got to be just like you want it to”. I really really really really like that line because I can really relate to it! I feel like I can sing that line to my future non-existent boyfriend. All I want is this guy but it has to be whenever he’s ready and on his terms. Speaking of me diggin’ a pony, my future non-existent boyfriend has a pony tail. I want to slap myself sometimes. I just laughed out loud when I wrote that too. No seriously, guys suck and The Beatles don’t.

Nothing’s gonna change my world…or Is it? (Professor Choice Posts #3)

Growing up in Brooklyn makes it a lot easier to be open to new things and in this case new things happens to be music. Music brings people together and can change a persons life. Every song tells a different story and can mean so much to a person. That’s what’s so great about music. You can relate and become a part of something that you weren’t a part of making. There are millions of songs that are out and that people listen to everyday. Some songs are good. Some songs aren’t that great. It all depends on how the listener feels inside when they hear it. ”Across The Universe” is a song off the album Let It Be that changed my mood. Once your mood has changed that means a song has affected you in some way.

When I first listened to this song I felt a weird feeling. That feeling you get when you’re unsure if you like something or not. I ended up having this song on repeat because I ended up liking the song a lot more than I thought I was. I asked a friend who is a fan of The Beatles what his favorite song off the Let It Be album was and he said this and his reasoning was ”Because it’s just that good…You don’t have to know why…It just is”. I agree with him completely because there’s something about this song that just makes you feel something. What interests me the most about this song is the line ”jai guru deva om” in the song. What I learned was that it means ”to give thanks to a heavenly teacher/guru”. I think it’s really cool that I found a picture of a tattoo of that line on someone’s ear! Kind of poetic and kind of crazy but very creative that the tattoo is on someone’s ear. That’s our only way of listening to music – is through our ears. You can never underestimate what music can do to a person. That’s how extreme and powerful a Beatles song or any song can do for that matter. Music is amazing and touches people to the point where they would get a permanent tattoo on themselves that’ll last forever. That’s exactly what a Beatles song does, it lasts forever.

My favorite parts of the song is where Lennon sings ”Words are flying out like endless rain into a paper cup, They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe.”  I think these words allow us to believe in words of meaning and feeling. These meanings and feelings can be shared with all kinds of people. The fact that love exists and sadness still lives in us, allows for them to actually be. We all say things we don’t mean and most of the time we do mean them. They fly out of us so fast and words can travel forever and back. Sometimes we find ourselves saying ”Oh maybe I shouldn’t have said that!” and then someone’s like ”Well too late”. Whatever you say can get around so quick and that’s why our parents always taught us to ”Watch what we say” right?

”Nothing’s gonna change my world” is so catchy and so great. I love that it’s repetitive and it’s so true. When you think a certain way and believe that there is no way in changing it, nothing’s gonna change your world. Another one of my favorite lyrics in this song is ”Sounds of laughter shades of earth are ringing Through my open views inciting and inviting me. Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns, It calls me on and on across the universe”.  We are surrounded by words of feeling and hope. Everyone around us has influenced our lives one way or another. We are encouraged by words of all people surrounding us from our everyday living to people around the globe. Not just by a certain kind of race or religion but just humanity across the universe in general. Through words, there is hope for peace in the world. We’re not alone. I just love this song because it’s just so good. I can’t explain it. Like who says ”pools of sorrow waves of joy” ? That’s awesomeness right there. Talented isn’t even the word. The Beatles are so much more than that. When I listen to ”Across The Universe”, “nothing’s gonna change my world” makes me feel calm. Like, dont sweat any of the problems life throws at you, because at the end of the day, you are still you.

Who are ”The Beatles” ? (Professor Choice Post #2)

Who doesn’t know who ”The Beatles” are? I don’t know anyone who doesn’t and I don’t think they will ever be non-existent. We might not know who they are personally or even their names but when you hear ”The Beatles” you automatically get a light bulb on the top of your head and you’re like ”Yeah. I know who they are but I don’t know who they are”. Most people my age or the younger generation don’t know who they are and what they were all about. The Beatles were a band that stole the hearts of many people in the 1960’s. The Beatles busted in the pop scene and took over the throne of music in that era. The Beatles changed what rock bands could do to music. From their album covers to their lyrics to their sound The Beatles will be a phenomenon that will continue to live on forever. The more time passes, the more their music influences people and will continues to grow. Even though they are not around to create new music, their music will still be heard and live on forever.

The band consists of four members also known as ”The Fab Four”. The band was officially together from 1962 to 1970. Although 8 years doesn’t seem like a lot they were still a huge success. They produced 12 albums in 8 years, if that isn’t pretty awesome I don’t know what is. The four bands members Band members included George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. They came from Liverpool, England. According to an online source, ”They were originally inspired by the simple guitar-and-washboard style  “skiffle” music. Skiffle was a lively type of acoustic (nonelectric)  music that used songs from British and American folk and popular music”. Let It Be was released on May 8, 1970, nearly 42 years ago today. That just blew my mind because people still listen to them and talk about them. This album was considered to their 12th and final studio album by the English rock band. Shortly after, Paul McCartney announced their break-up . Meanwhile their music was about love and peace, something that they wanted everyone in the world to experience. What I find funny is that they were singing about ”peace” but where was the peace between the band during this album? It makes me sad that a band like this could have experienced a break up. All good things come to an end though, right?  As I’m writing these blogs, I can’t help but replay over and over the song ”Let It Be”. I think it’s probably one of my favorites and aches my heart because music brings people together but it didn’t for this band. It actually tore them apart.

This album is new to me and something I have to experience on my own. Usually when a popular song comes out on the radio everyone talks about it and all ”like” it at the same time. I’m listening to this album 40 years too late. I guess it’s better late than never. I’ve listened to this album on my stoop while watching cars pass by on the highway and at that moment I felt relaxed. I felt like there was no pressure on me. Nothing holding me back in that moment. Sometimes we forget that we’re people living in a world that doesn’t stop for nobody and our time on this planet can be gone in a blink of an eye. We are so caught up in the struggles of everyday life, getting that A! or getting that dream car you always wanted or waking up at 5am for your full-time job in the city or making others happy before making yourself happy. I think that’s what The Beatles wanted us to think about. As I continue listening, I’m slowly becoming a fan of The Beatles. I’m learning to appreciate their music and the struggles they went through to produce pretty awesome lyrics.
